Overview: In this case, the clients were working with a designer who suggested they dress up their somewhat plain, mantle-less fireplace with a piece of natural unfinished lumber. The clients spend a majority of their summer at a vacation home in Maine, and brought back a birch log that they felt was “right” for their mantle. We then took their log, quartered, sanded and routed it, forged the mounting hardware and installed the piece on site. The hardware itself is forged 1 inch square stock (nice and heavy) and forged 1/4 inch by 1 and 1/2 inch bar. Bracket was secured to log using forged rose head nails. As usual, the metalwork has been hot coated with proprietary beeswax/boiled linseed oil mixture to both prevent oxidization and to add depth to the overall finish of the piece.
